Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Step Out

We spend a considerable amount of our life living within our comfort zone. We’re creatures of habit and we like to avoid anything that causes us pain, poses a potential risk, or makes us uncomfortable.

But what if there are amazing things, experiences, and people out there, just outside our comfort zone that we’re missing out on?

What if it isn’t nearly as scary to step out of our comfort zone as we thought?

What’s Your Comfort Zone?

A comfort zone is a place or situation where we feel safe. It doesn’t cause us stress or anxiety to do what we’re doing. It’s where we live without getting uncomfortable or stretching.

It’s a place where we feel confident and we know just about all there is to know about it. We’re in full control or at least we feel that way.

Going forward, I would like you to start paying attention to what you do because of reasons like:

  • That’s how I’ve always done it.
  • It’s comfortable and what I’m used to.

Those are good indications that you’re working within your comfort zone.

Just as important are the things you don’t do or decline. Ask yourself why you’re saying no to a person or opportunity. Is it because it’s not a good fit, or is it because it makes you uncomfortable or you are scared of it?

Start paying attention to your comfort zone and define it for yourself.

Comfort Zones Limit You

Here’s the problem with living only within your comfort zone. Not only is it boring but you’re potentially missing out on fun new stuff and it severely limits you in what you can do.

Being stuck with what you can do and where you feel safe, keeps you from reaching your full potential.

The Edges or Outer Limits of Your Comfort Zone Make Up the Realm of Possibility

Stepping out of your comfort zone isn’t easy. But there’s good news. You don’t have to go way out of it to benefit from it. Making it to the edges of your comfort zone and stretching it just a bit of stepping out just over the edges or outer limits is all it takes.

8 Strategies for Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Just Try It and Dip Your Toes In

New opportunities present themselves to us all the time and often in new and unexpected ways. When that happens, instead of retreating back to your comfort zone, tell yourself that it’s ok to just try it.

You don’t have to commit. You don’t have to jump in all the way. Just dip your toes in.

Say Yes and Learn As You Go

So often we get stuck with this idea of perfection. We think that we have to know everything there is to know about something before we get started.

We are afraid of failure and won’t let ourselves start a new project until we are sure we have at least the basics covered. Yet, that’s not how we learn as children.

We don’t take a class on walking or riding a bike. Instead, we give it a try and learn as we go. This is a critical form of self-care.

What’s The Worst That Could Happen?

Oftentimes, the thing we’re most afraid of and that keeps us firmly in our comfort zone is the unknown. Once we know what we’re dealing with it’s a lot less scary and easier to make a plan and take action.

Break It Down Into Baby Steps

Sometimes a project or task simply seems too big and overwhelming to tackle. Whenever you find yourself in this type of situation, start breaking the big job down into baby steps.

The Sink or Swim Strategy

One of the best ways to learn a new language is to immerse yourself in it. The same holds true in other areas of our lives. When we jump in and it’s sink or swim, we learn fast.

The Power of Accountability

It’s easy to stay in our comfort zone and not experience any personal growth when there’s no one to call us out on it. Accountability works and it can work for you when it comes to stepping out of your comfort zone.

You Don’t Have To Go It Alone

Find that supportive person in your life and recruit them as your very own cheerleader. Another great option is finding another person or even an entire group with goals similar to use.

Hire a Coach

Last but not least, consider hiring a coach. When you have big goals to reach in life, a life coach is a great way to shortcut the process.

A big bonus that comes along with stepping out of your comfort zone is realizing your full potential.  We will often surprise ourselves with the new-found abilities that we never even realized we had once we step out of our comfort zone and into life’s adventures.
